BlenderDiplom Modifier Contest

Written by  Frederik Steinmetz
This is the first contest at BlenderDiplom that features prizes! And modifiers! And even more modifiers!

In accordance with the Modifiers Series we started a special kind of Contest. We want this contest to be simplistic so beginners to advanced everybody has equal chances. The main challenge is creativity. You can submit abstract, VFX, animations or realistic images, no category is preferential.

Dim lights

Contest Rules:

  • You may only use the Blender native mesh primitives.
  • You may not use sculpt mode
  • You may use Edit Mode, but only to modify weight, crease, sharp, bevel weight and vertex groups and to unwrap or assign materials. No deformation in edit mode are allowed
  • Lattices and Curves may be modified in edit mode.
  • Curves may only be used as a path or a curve deform object, not rendered.
  • You may only use the generate and deform and modifiers, simulation modifiers are not allowed.
  • You may use any renderer you like.
  • You may use the Blender Compositor for finishing touches, but your work should be more 3D than compositing.
  • In order to verify that you have used nothing but modifiers and primitives, you will have to provide the blendfile if chosen as a winner.

### important update: Let us know if you even want the tickets, would be a shame to reward a winner with something he/she didn't want. ###

You can submit your content here: www.blenderartists.org

Deadline is 1st of August! The winners will be determined by Gottfried Hofmann and Frederik Steinmetz.

Prizes:

1st and 2nd prize: One VIP-Ticket for Campus Party Berlin 2012. Not the ordinary one you can get for 128,- Euros but a special ticket with access to the VIP area and more.

3rd prize: One item from the Blender.org e-store!

Hints:
There are already tons of array tentacles out there, so be innovative and creative, think abstract, think combinations. Here some inspiration:

As you can see this contest is fairly restrictive, so we are very excited about what Blender users can come up with, using only the most basic tools.

Can we please hurry up a bit with the winners?

Maybe just link to the posts?

Could you maybe just post link to their posts instead of the actual entries?

That way you wouldn't have to upload the images to your site.

We decided on the winners, unfortunately, we don't have the permission from everybody, that we can use the picture on our site.
Please send an email to us dirtybird@gmx.de , letting us know that we can use the winner in the presentation on our site, you may add if you want to that we have to credit you and can't sell the picture. Please use your Belnderartists nick in the reference.
    Thank you

Do we know when the winners will be announced?

    Very bad.
That costs you 5 scores! `´

Oops! I didn't watch your video before participating. Hopefully it isn't bad to have a similar concept (under the sea)??
BTW that fishy is great. After the contest you HAVE to show how to create that. ^^

@patrox I would consider the hook modifier to be a valid workaround.

  • Comment Link patrox Sunday, 22 July 2012 10:11 posted by patrox

What about using the hook-modifier? It would give you a lot of freedom to modify the shape by hand.

@Charblaze Certainly. Those are important features. I don't think there is much (if anything) in object mode that we don't allow.

  • Comment Link Charblaze Friday, 20 July 2012 14:09 posted by Charblaze

Can I apply (ctrl+A) scale/rotation/location transformation to the object?

  • Comment Link Frederik Steinmetz Thursday, 19 July 2012 20:36 posted by Frederik Steinmetz

@Sven: sure, you can join objects
@blenduuuuuuuhuhuhuhuu, since I would like to stick to the rules that we made as strictly as possible, I don't think I should allow edge loops (supposed to be a workaround challenge as well) but you can use the subdivide mod. and click apply.
@weasel of course you can use parents and change the origin, that's not deformation.

manipulating in edit mode isn't allowed, that's clear, but what about changing an object's origin in object mode and parenting objects? would be good e.g. for array modifiers...

can we use loop cuts or subdivide in editmode?

(Not for changing the shape but for making it ready for a modifier, like displace...)

    can we join objects?

@ Blenderizer: yes you may apply modifiers
@ Beareguard: yes, it would fall under the same category as lattices, but you can't render your "cage"

    Is applying modifiers allowed?

  • Comment Link Beauregard Thursday, 19 July 2012 01:51 posted by Beauregard

What about the Mesh deform? Could I use edit mode to deform a mesh used for a mesh deform modifier?

i'll take that partially back. everything seems to include one or more partially questionable and disqualifying elements as well. often just one. i guess i could still make something. just to gratify my silly ego. i'm not sure i could actually do anything with any of the prizes, in the unlikely event i actually won one of them though.
