2nd BlenderDiplom Tutorial Challenge!

It's on again! The release of Blender 2.62 will be celebrated by a new tutorial on BlenderDiplom! But first we'll give you the chance to have a go at the effect yourself!

Dim lights

A logo dissolve or disintegration is one of the standards in VFX and motion graphics. It's been the domain for packages like Houdini or After Effects for quiet a while - now let's tackle it in Blender. You can achieve this effect with any version of Blender 2.6, but 2.62 will make it a lot easier. So grab a Blender 2.62 release candidate suitable for your system or a recent build from Graphicall.org and take the challenge! The Tutorial on how I created this will follow shortly after the official release of Blender 2.62!

To take part, upload your animations to the BlenderDiplom Facebook Wall, the BlenderDiplom Goole+ Stream or create a video response on YouTube. You can also paste links to videos in the comments below. A good service to share Blendfiles is Pasteall.org.

Have fun taking the challenge and dont forget: The best way to learn something is figuring it out for yourself!

Gottfried 'Scott' Hofmann has discovered Blender for himself when the first alpha of revision 2.5 was released. From the very beginning he was mainly interested in VFX-related aspects of Blender like the smoke simulation. Since then, he has accumulated quite some knowledge in that field which he now shares with the community through BlenderDiplom.

    nur jetzt möchte ich das selbe mit cycles machen aber es gelingt nicht , ich habe noch viel zu lernen mit den nodes

    Hey AnW, using the smoke simulation for something like this of course is a good idea - if only those blocks at the emitting particles would go away somehow :/

    @Tiago: That's already pretty cool, how about a second version with text?

    Jimmy: To get a result like Jupiter Jazz I would not change a lot, maybe add another force field and of course work on the settings, but in general it should not be much different from what I did..

    Wow... I also quite like your version! That's basically how I imagine it would be done using Smoke.

    I remembered this work by Paolo Berto (Jupiter Jazz) called "Sublimation" many years ago. Rendered in 3Delight:

    So... when do have until you do the tutorial? I have my interpretation almost finished and wan't to put it up before the tutorial.

    Yours does look quite nice. I went a little different direction with mine though.

    I don't usually do these kind of things. But I have always wanted to do a dissolve effect like this, so I thought, why not? :)

    Cool effect, Psy-Fi! I like that effect you made, you are right, it's just like the one in Final Fantasy.

    I am still brainstorming and trying to figure out the best way to achieve the dissolve animation.

    Still I can't get result as good as Gottfried's one where Particles really moves like fluid and then it as it gets smaller it has Curl and Twirl, and disappear. Maybe Gottfried uses few Turbulance?

    I noticed rotating Turbulance Force will also give some effect.

    Maybe instead of "Point" Field, I need to use "Plane" or "Curve".

    How does "Voronoi" Texture Field any different to "Cloud" Texture Field?

    I am wondering what's the best way to visualize the effect of Field on Particle? So far, I turn Particles into Line to preview.

    The only thing I haven't done is animating the mesh visibility and adding a voronoi field. I used brownian motion for this but maybe a smaller amount would help, as well as lower speed for the particles (not straightforward with the setup I used)

    Jimmy: You got really close :) Of course the effect can still be improved - a complex mesh like this makes emission of particles from volume a total ressource-hog, though...

    If we look carefully, we can see the dissipation happens from "logo" mesh object that is pretty much hollow inside.

    I wonder if we should also try how the effects look if we are to fill the inside of the mesh (8000+ Particles, emitted and scattered as Volume).

    The inside of the mesh can also be Point Cloud data?

    Ich bin absoluter Blenderneuling. Ich habe letztens dein kostenloses Tut gemacht wo der Schriftzug aufgelöst wurde.

    So wie Jimmy Gunawan es gezeigt hat.

    Man kann doch auch sein Objekt volumetrisch erstellen. So daß er aussieht wie mit Rauchgefüllt. Vielleicht hat es ja damit was zu tun und dann wieder mit unmenschlich verwirrenen Nodes bearbeiten.

    Ich bin auf jeden Fall sehr auf dein Tutorial gespannt.

    It's not as refined as yours though, I love the details and the motion of your dissolve effects!

    Wonder if there is smoke/fluid also in play?

    I like this approach - people stop asking questions and try answer them, instead they try to google it and if they can't find the answer they just give up. not everything is tutorialised in this world.
    But in this case you ignite the imagination and will get your answer eventually - I think it's great!
