Ultra Fast Compositor Thanks to OpenCL?

Written by  Gottfried Hofmann

OpenCL is currently one killer approach to computing-intesive tasks. Using this technique, the CPU and GPU share their computation power, which can lead to massive speedups of rendering, physics simulations and of course compositing. Behold, with your help this grand thing can come to Blender!

Jeroen Bakker aka atmind has releases a proposal for speeding up Blender's compositor using OpenCL. He had also talks with Ton Rosendaal, the chairman of the Blender Foundation, about his proposal. So this is a really serious commitment. To fund the project, atmind has started a Fundraiser. By donating to the project, YOU can help out make this a reality (yes, I also donated). To get development started, $500 still need to be raised. So if you'd like an ultra-fast compositor in Blender, chip in!

Btw: He has already created a working prototype which he demonstrated at the last Blender Conference in Amsterdam. Check out the massive speedups below:

Gottfried 'Scott' Hofmann has discovered Blender for himself when the first alpha of revision 2.5 was released. From the very beginning he was mainly interested in VFX-related aspects of Blender like the smoke simulation. Since then, he has accumulated quite some knowledge in that field which he now shares with the community through BlenderDiplom.
