BlenderDiplom Modifier Contest

This is the first contest at BlenderDiplom that features prizes! And modifiers! And even more modifiers!

In accordance with the Modifiers Series we started a special kind of Contest. We want this contest to be simplistic so beginners to advanced everybody has equal chances. The main challenge is creativity. You can submit abstract, VFX, animations or realistic images, no category is preferential.

Contest Rules:

  • You may only use the Blender native mesh primitives.
  • You may not use sculpt mode
  • You may use Edit Mode, but only to modify weight, crease, sharp, bevel weight and vertex groups and to unwrap or assign materials. No deformation in edit mode are allowed
  • Lattices and Curves may be modified in edit mode.
  • Curves may only be used as a path or a curve deform object, not rendered.
  • You may only use the generate and deform and modifiers, simulation modifiers are not allowed.
  • You may use any renderer you like.
  • You may use the Blender Compositor for finishing touches, but your work should be more 3D than compositing.
  • In order to verify that you have used nothing but modifiers and primitives, you will have to provide the blendfile if chosen as a winner.

3rd prize: One item from the Blender.org e-store!

As you can see this contest is fairly restrictive, so we are very excited about what Blender users can come up with, using only the most basic tools.

Frederik Steinmetz studied biology in Berlin. After writing his diploma thesis about cave dwelling spiders, he discovered Blender in 2008. in 2010 he felt comfortable enough to model spiders and other animals and continued to texture rig and animate them. He Joined BlenderDiplom in late 2011 and is now casting tutorials on a regular basis.

    HONG KONG The former CIA employee who leaked top-secret information about U.S. surveillance programs said in a new interview in Hong Kong on Wednesday that he is not attempting to hide from justice here but hopes to use the city as a base to reveal wrongdoing.
    Edward Snowden dropped out of sight after checking out of a Hong Kong hotel on Monday. The South China Morning Post newspaper said it was able to locate and interview him on Wednesday. It provided brief excerpts from the interview on its website.
    It said Snowden, who has been both praised and condemned for releasing documents about U.S. telephone and Internet surveillance programs, said he was "neither a traitor nor hero. I'm an American."
    Asked about his choice of Hong Kong to leak the information, Snowden said, "People who think I made a mistake in picking Hong Kong as a location misunderstand my intentions. I am not here to hide from justice; I am here to reveal criminality."
    The newspaper quoted him as saying that he had several opportunities to flee from Hong Kong, but that he "would rather stay and fight the United States government in the courts, because I have faith in Hong Kong's rule of law."
    "My intention is to ask the courts and people of Hong Kong to decide my fate," he said.
    Snowden said he plans to stay in the city until he is "asked to leave," the newspaper said.
    Snowden, 29, arrived in Hong Kong from his home in Hawaii on May 20, just after taking leave from his National Security Agency contracting firm Booz Allen Hamilton, which has since fired him.
    He said he had not dared contact his family or girlfriend since disclosing that he was the source of the top-secret documents.

    Two FBI agents visited Snowden's father's home in Pennsylvania on Monday.
    Questions remain about why Snowden chose to go public in Hong Kong, a Chinese autonomous region that maintains a Western-style legal system and freedom of speech.
    Hong Kong has an extradition agreement with the United States, but there are exceptions in cases of political persecution or where there are concerns over cruel or humiliating treatment.
    U.S. authorities have yet to bring charges against Snowden or file an extradition request with Hong Kong.

    Oops! I didn't watch your video before participating. Hopefully it isn't bad to have a similar concept (under the sea)??
    BTW that fishy is great. After the contest you HAVE to show how to create that. ^^

    @patrox I would consider the hook modifier to be a valid workaround.

    What about using the hook-modifier? It would give you a lot of freedom to modify the shape by hand.

    @Charblaze Certainly. Those are important features. I don't think there is much (if anything) in object mode that we don't allow.

    @Sven: sure, you can join objects
    @blenduuuuuuuhuhuhuhuu, since I would like to stick to the rules that we made as strictly as possible, I don't think I should allow edge loops (supposed to be a workaround challenge as well) but you can use the subdivide mod. and click apply.
    @weasel of course you can use parents and change the origin, that's not deformation.

    manipulating in edit mode isn't allowed, that's clear, but what about changing an object's origin in object mode and parenting objects? would be good e.g. for array modifiers...

    can we use loop cuts or subdivide in editmode?

    (Not for changing the shape but for making it ready for a modifier, like displace...)

    @ Blenderizer: yes you may apply modifiers
    @ Beareguard: yes, it would fall under the same category as lattices, but you can't render your "cage"
